State releases annual AYP report | News

Nearly 75 percent of all public Alabama schools and slightly more than 80 percent of Alabama school systems achieved Adequate Yearly Progress status for the 2011-2012 school year, according to the Alabama State Department of Education.

The AYP report, released today, shows an overall improvement from last year's results. In 2010-2011, 72 percent of Alabama schools met AYP requirements. This year, 26 school systems did not make AYP, in comparison to 49 school systems that did not make AYP last year.

A school's AYP status is based on student achievement, reading and math assessments, graduation rates of high schools and the attendance rates for elementary and middle schools. The No Child Left Behind Act sets the criteria standards for AYP results and requires schools to meet 100 percent of their yearly goals in order to achieve AYP status. Even if a school meets 99 percent of their goals, they cannot achieve AYP status for the year.

If a school does not achieve AYP status for two years, the school is designated "in school improvement." It takes two years of meeting AYP goals for that status to be dropped.

In the 2011-2012 school year, 248 schools were listed in school improvement and 28 total systems were listed in school improvement. Last year, 277 schools were listed in school improvement and the same number of systems, 28, were considered in school improvement status.
